The town of Briançon: Art & History Town

Exploring Briançon, capital of the Escartons republic

Since 1990, Briançon has been awarded the prestigious "Villes d'Art Pays et d'Histoire" (Art and History Town) designation. Awarded by the French ministry of Culture, it is an official symbol of a rich cultural past.

The Gargouille

Entering from the Champ de Mars, two very steep main streets pass through the Old Town. One of them, the Grande Gargouille, has a channel of water running down the centre, primarily used for fighting fires. When strolling around the streets, you can browse the numerous craft shops and other tourist attractions scattered along the streets. There are also numerous restaurants for enjoying pleasant meals.

The Collegiate Church

The Collegiate Church in Briançon is an impressive monument designed by Marshall Vauban. It was completed in 1718, after his death. Situated within the fortified walls of the Old Town, the church overlooks the surrounding homes and is easily recognisable by its two domed bell towers, and is beautifully lit up in the evenings.

Guided Tours

The Briançon Tourist Office is situated opposite the Collegiate Church, in the "Maison du Temple", which belonged to the Templar commandery until 1923. The guides from the Tourist Office offer themed tours for exploring and understanding the heritage in Briançon.
